01 · The plant

It begins on the water.

Water hyacinth is a floating plant with glossy leaves and violet flowers. It spreads quickly. Left unchecked, its dense mats can shade the water below, reduce oxygen exchange and obstruct fishing, irrigation and navigation.

Jalkumbhi begins with harvested plant material. The fibre is given another use: a handmade paper that becomes the cover of this notebook.

02 · The cover paper

The fibre stays in the story.

The two fibres come together in a naturally textured sheet. Small dark and pale strands remain visible, giving the paper its speckled surface. Variations in the handmade sheet remain part of the finished cover.

On JK20, a seedling illustration sits on the front and fine botanical linework runs across the back. The fibre is still visible around the artwork.

03 · Pond to paper

Harvested. Blended. Made into a sheet.

A sequence of preparation, papermaking and drying gives the plant fibre a new form.
